SEMIFINALS GAME 5 RECAP: Aces Drop Heart-Breaker, 87-84, In Game 5 of WNBA Semifinals

PHOENIX (October 8, 2021)—The Phoenix Mercury outscored Las Vegas 29-18 in the fourth quarter Friday evening to eke out an 87-84 victory and advance to the WNBA Finals.


First Quarter (Phoenix 20, Las Vegas 14)

The Aces led by two, 7-5, but the Mercury scored 10 straight to go up 8, 15-7. Shey Peddy led all scorers with 7 points. Phoenix made 38.9 percent of its field goal attempts while the Aces made 31.2 percent of theirs.

Second Quarter (Phoenix 44, Las Vegas 42)

Las Vegas trailed by nine, 37-28, but scored eight straight points to slice the Mercury advantage to one, 37-36. kelsey Plum scored 10 points in the period to lead the Aces while Brittney Griner scored 10 to lead Phoenix.

Third Quarter (Las Vegas 66, Phoenix 58)

Las Vegas scored the first 12 points of the quarter too go up 10, 56-46. They held Phoenix without a field goal for more than 7 minutes. A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage each scored 8 points to lead the Aces who shot 50 percent for the period.

Fourth Quarter (Phoenix 87, Las Vegas 84)

The Mercury scored the first 12 points of the period to regain the lead, 70-66. The Aces went back up four, 81-77, with 2:27 on the clock. Phoenix scored 7 straight points and closed out the win by making three of four shots from the charity stripe.
