Las Vegas Waives Three Guards As Team Prepares For Second Preseason Game

Las Vegas, NV (May 9, 2018)—The Las Vegas Aces made three roster moves this week, waiving guards Jacki Gemelos, Brooke Johnson and Kahlia Lawrence.

Gemelos was originally drafted out of USC by Minnesota in the third round of the 2012 WNBA Draft. The Lynx waived her before the start of the season, and Gemelos signed with the Chicago Sky in 2015 for whom she played 17 games. The Aces signed her as a free agent this offseason.

Las Vegas signed rookie Brooke Johnson from UNLV the day after the 2018 WNBA Draft. She was one of the top defenders in the Mountain West Conference throughout her career, leading the league in steals as a sophomore and junior, and finishing second as a senior. She helped lead the Lady Rebels to a share of their first-ever Mountain West regular season title in 2017-18, and was named conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Minnesota selected Lawrence with the 24th pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, and at the conclusion of the draft, traded her, along with JiSu Park, to the Aces in exchange for the rights to Jill Barta, whom the Aces drafted with the 32nd pick in the 2018 Draft, and Las Vegas’ second round pick in 2019.

Lawrence led Mercer to the Southern Conference Championship this season, scoring 29 points in the title game. She was also named the Southern Conference Player of the Year. Mercer dropped a five-point decision to #4 seed Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

The Aces began the 2018 preseason with a 98-63 victory over the Chinese National Team. They travel to Dallas this Sunday for a 12 pm PT tip against the Wings in the team’s’ final tuneup before the start of the regular season.
