DOHA, QATAR (October 13, 2019)—Jackie Young helped lead a balanced scoring attack Sunday morning, as the U.S. 3×3 Women’s Basketball Team picked up a pair of Group A wins in day one of the World Beach Games.
In their first game, the U.S. upended the Dominican Republic, 22-5 (box score), holding the opposition to 13 percent shooting from the field including 0 for 9 from long distance. Napheesa Collier and Ruthy Hebard each scored seven points for the victors. Young scored three points as the U.S. connected on 65-percent of their shots from the field.
In their second game of the day, Young and company picked up a 22-4 win over Jordan (box score). Young scored a game-high tying six points in the victory, going six of eight from the field.
“It was definitely fun,” said Young of her first USA Basketball experience. “I worked for this for a long time, so to be able to finally be able to put on a USA jersey, it’s just an amazing feeling. I’m super blessed to have the opportunity to play for USA Basketball.”
The U.S. takes on Russia, October 15 at 5 am PT in their final game of Group play. The Russians are also 2-0, having defeated the Dominican Republic, 19-10, and Jordan, 16-7.
“[Russia is] a good team. [They’re] always good. They really look to go into their posts. They have two bigger post players, so we have to be ready for that. We need to play good defense, watch the slips and things like that. I think if we go out there and play our game, play the way we’ve been playing, we’ll be fine.”
