LAS VEGAS (September 2, 2021)—Despite being without All-Stars Liz Cambage (health and safety protocols) and Dearica Hamby (ankle) Thursday, Las Vegas (20-7) jumped out to an early double-digit lead against Chicago (14-14) before fending off a late Sky run in a 90-83 victory. The win moved the Aces a half-game closer to front-running Connecticut (21-6), and kept them two games ahead of Seattle (19-10) and two-and-a-half in front of Minnesota (17-9).
LEAST MEANINGFUL STAT OF THE YEAR—For the first time in WNBA history, three players from the same team each scored 21 points in the same game—The Aces Kelsey Plum, A’ja Wilson and Riquna Williams each hit the mark.
First Quarter (Las Vegas 31, Chicago 14)
Chicago led, 9-8 with 6:23 to go in the quarter, but Las Vegas scored six in a row to secure the lead. The Aces scored the final 14 points of the period. A’ja Wilson and Riquna Williams combined to make 9 of 12 shots for 20 points.
Second Quarter (Las Vegas 52, Chicago 36)
The Aces lead vacillated between 11 and 19 the entire quarter. Stefanie Dolson made all 4 of her shots in the period for a game-high 9 in the quarter.
Third Quarter (Las Vegas 69, Chicago 65)
Las Vegas still led by 14, 69-55, with 1:59 t0 go, but the Sky scored the final 10 points of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter (Las Vegas 90, Chicago 83)
The Sky opened the fourth on an 8-1 read to take their first lead since the first quarter. It was still a two-point Chicago advantage, 79-77 , with 4:41 remaining, but a 10-0 Aces run gave Las Vegas a lead it would not relinquish. Chelsea Gray and Riquna Williams each scored 4 points during the game-winning run.
