GAME PREVIEW—Las Vegas Aces Look to Extend 6-Game Winning Streak at Chicago Tuesday
Capping their 3-game road trip with a game against the Chicago Sky on July 25, the Las Vegas Aces (21-2) are in search of a 6th victory in as many games. The game, played at Wintrust Arena, tips at 4 pm PT and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
The Aces and Sky faced off once this year. Coming off their first loss of the season, the Aces rebounded for a 93-80 win in Las Vegas on June 11. In what was then the highest field goal percentage recorded in the W in 2023, the Aces shot a red-hot 58.5% from the field as A’ja Wilson poured in 21 points and hauled down 10 rebounds. Chelsea Gray shot 8-of-9 from the field, 3-of-3 from 3-point, for 19 points; Kelsey Plum hit for 16 points and Jackie Young had 14. Marina Mabrey topped out for the Sky with 20 points.
The Aces have three players scoring at least 19 points a game, including Wilson (20.5), Young (19.2) and Plum (19.0). No team in the WNBA has ever finished a season with 3 players scoring more than 18 a contest.
Gray is averaging a career-best 6.8 apg, while adding 12.1 ppg, while shooting 50% from the field, 43.9% from 3-point and 91.7% at the line. In the past 5 games alone, she has averaged an impressive 9.0 apg.
Making 50% of her field goal attempts on the season, Plum upped that mark to 57.3% in her past 8 games.
On the verge of grabbing her 1,500th rebound (1,482), Wilson is leading the league in rebounding and blocked shots with career-bests 9.8 rpg and 2.1 bpg.
Young has scored in double figures all 23 games this season, which is the fourth-longest active streak in the WNBA, while netting 56.0% of her shots from the field and a league-best 48.6% from beyond the arc.
The Aces are tops in the league in scoring (93.5 ppg), blocked shots (5.2 bpg), points in the paint (40.7), field goal percentage (.503), offensive (114.1) and defensive (94.9) efficiency rating and are holding opponents to the fewest points in the league (78.0 ppg.).
Paced by Kaleah Copper’s 17.8 ppg and Mabrey’s 14.7 ppg, the Sky are averaging 77.5 ppg and 42.1 rpg, while shooting 42.8% from the floor. Alanna Smith, who adds 9.6 ppg, is the Sky’s top rebounder at 7.0 per game.
The Sky are 4-6 in their last 10 games and snapped a 4-game losing streak with a 90-75 performance over the Seattle Storm on July 22.
The Aces and Sky have split their 40 previous contests, but the Aces have won the last 3 meetings, including the 2022 Commissioner’s Cup championship, and 11 of the last 16 in the series.
