WHITE PLAINS, NY (July 7, 2019)—The Las Vegas Aces travel to Westchester County, Sunday, to take on the New York Liberty for the third and final time during the regular season. Tip is slated for 12 pm PT.
The Aces and Liberty split their previous two meetings, with each team winning on their home floor.
Las Vegas enters the week with wins in four of its last five games … sort of. The Aces Friday evening game against Washington was suspended at halftime with the Mystics leading 51-36, due to a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck Ridgecrest, California—130 miles southwest of Las Vegas. When information regarding the resumption of the game becomes available, it will be posted on wnba.com.
Las Vegas remains 8-5 on the season. Through 13 games last year, the team was 4-9. All four of the Ace’s most recent victories have come at home, where they are 6-2 this year.
A’ja Wilson leads Las Vegas in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game while connecting on 50.6 percent of her shots from the field. She is two games removed from pouring in a career-high 39 points, which is also the most points scored in a WNBA game this season. Wilson was named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season on July 1.
Liz Cambage (14.9), Kayla McBride (14.8) and super-sub Dearica Hamby (11.0) are also averaging in double figures for the Aces.
Despite the team’s offensive weapons, Las Vegas hangs its collective hat on the defensive end where the Aces hold opponents to a league-low 39.1 percent shooting from the field. Las Vegas also leads the W in defensive field goal percentage, adjusted field goal percentage, and defensive efficiency.
New York (7-7) has won four straight games heading into Sunday. Three of those victories came on the road, and three were by four points or less, including two one-point victories.
Tina Charles leads the WNBA in scoring at 19.2 points per game, but she connects on just 38.8 percent of her shots from the field. Charles also ranks sixth in the league in rebounding, and tied for fourth in minutes played. Kia Nurse (16.7), Amanda Zahui B (11.4) and Asia Durr (11.4) are also averaging double figures in scoring for New York.
