GAME PREVIEW: Aces Head to the Bay Area for Debut Matchup Against Valkyries

LAS VEGAS (June 6, 2025) — The Las Vegas Aces (4-2) will travel to San Francisco for their historic first contest against the Golden State Valkyries (2-5) on June 7 at Chase Center. The game, which tips at 12 p.m. PT, will air nationally on ABC. 

The game will mark the first time Aces head coach Becky Hammon will face former Aces assistant and current Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase. Nakase coached under Hammon from 2022-24, and helped the Aces earn back-to-back championships.  

The Aces enter Saturday’s marquee match-up with a recent 75-50 win over Seattle,led by Western Conference Player of the Week A’ja Wilson’s 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. Jackie Young chipped in 12 points; rookie Aaliyah Nye tallied a career-high 10 points off the bench, and Chelsea Gray and Jewell Loyd also scored 10.  

Six games into the 2025 season, the Aces are being led by Wilson, who is averaging team-highs of 22.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, 4.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game. The team’s scoring efforts are bolstered by 18.2 points from Young, 12.3 from Gray and 10.2 from Young; while Kiah Stokes is providing 5.7 rebounds and Loyd 4.5 rebounds a game.  

The Aces, who were among the league’s top three best shooting teams in each of the past five seasons, are struggling to connect, hitting on 39.7% of their shots from the field (11th in the league). However, the team is leading the W at the line, making 84.2% of their free throw attempts.  

Golden State has dropped their last 4 games, most recently against Phoenix on Thursday. Veronica Burton led the Valkyries balanced scoring attack with 16 points, followed by three Golden State starters scoring in double digits. Burton leads the team in both points (12.6 ppg) and assists (3.9 apg) this season, followed in the scoring column by Kayla Thornton (11.7 ppg), Janelle Salaün (11.5 ppg) and Tiffany Hayes (10.0 ppg), who the Aces signed out of retirement early in the 2024 season.  

In addition to Hayes and Nakase, another 2024 member of the Aces and one of last year’s Las Vegas draft picks Kate Martin is posting 6.5 ppg and shooting 42.1% from 3-point range.  

The two teams will meet again three times this season: July 12 and August 3 at home and August 6 in the Bay Area. 

UP NEXT: The Aces will have a four-day break until their next match-up against Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 11 at Michelob ULTRA Arena. The Aces previously defeated the Sparks on May 30, 96-81, at home. The game, which tips at 7 p.m. PT, will air locally on Vegas 34.
