GAME PREVIEW: Aces Continue Five-Game Stretch with Dream Game Sunday
LAS VEGAS, NV (Aug. 12, 2023)—The Las Vegas Aces (26-3) host the Atlanta Dream (15-15) at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Sunday in hopes of extending their franchise-record 19-game home winning streak. Tip-off is at 6 pm PT, and the game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, FOX 5 and Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network.
Las Vegas is 8-1 in its last 9 match-ups with Atlanta. The last time the Dream defeated the Aces was July 19, 2022, in Las Vegas.
The Aces won the last contest with the Dream on Aug. 1, as Jackie Young scored 24 points and A’ja Wilson had 20 points and 11 boards. Cheyenne Parker led the Dream with a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Aces suffered their third loss of the season on August 6 in New York, but quickly put it behind them with a pair of overwhelming offense performances in double-digit victories over Dallas and Washington. Over the past two games, Las Vegas is averaging a whopping 108.5 points and 129.9 OER, while shooting 52.3% from the field, 50.0% from beyond the arc and 90.6% from the line. Wilson, who tied a franchise-high with 40 points against the Mystics, is averaging 34.0 points and 13.0 rebounds since the loss to the Liberty.
On the season, the Aces lead the league in almost every major offensive category including scoring (94.2 ppg), offensive efficiency (114.7), field goal percentage (.499), 3-point percentage (.391) and free throw percentage (.832). Those marks put Las Vegas on pace to become the first team to pace the WNBA in all three shooting percentage categories. The Aces also continue to lead the league in defensive efficiency (97.4).
Among the WNBA’s most high-volume shooters (300+ field goal attempts), Wilson (.544), Young (.541) and Chelsea Gray (.506) rank first, second and third in the league. The Aces are just as proficient from distance with three of the top four players in the W in 3-point field goal percentage—Young (1st, .480), Gray (2nd, .463), and Alysha Clark (4th, .432).
Las Vegas was the first team to secure a playoff berth this year, but seeding is still up for grabs in the WNBA playoff bracket. The Aces are 3 games ahead of New York (23-6) and 5.5 games ahead of the Connecticut Sun (21-9).
Atlanta, which dropped an 85-74 decision at Los Angeles earlier this evening, is in the hunt for its first playoff berth since 2018. The Dream used a 7-game winning streak midway through the season to jump into the upper division, but they are 3-7 over their most recent 10 contests. During that stretch, they rank last in the league in offensive efficiency, and are shooting less than 41% from the field.
Atlanta plays at the fastest pace in the league, and defense is its calling card, as they boast the fifth most efficient defense in the WNBA (100.9), holding opponents to 42.3% from the field (2nd), and 33.0% from 3-point range (3rd), while blocking a league-best 5.2 shots per game.
2023 All-Stars Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard are each averaging 17.7 points per game for the Dream.
