San Antonio gave up its first round pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft in the 2008 draft day trade that brought them Ann Wauters from the Atlanta Dream, They still had three overall picks in the draft, however, as the Silver Stars acquired the Dream’s second round pick (number 14 overall) in that same trade.
With that pick, San Antonio selected Liberty forward Megan Frazee (pictured). The two-time Big South Player of the Year was a key reserve for the Silver Stars as a rookie, averaging 5.0 points and 2.9 rebounds, while connecting on 37.8 percent of her three-pointers in 29 games. A knee injury limited Frazee to just 10 games in 2010, and San Antonio waived her on June 29 of that same year. The Washington Mystics picked Frazee up prior to the 2011 season, but waived her prior to the start of the regular season.
With the team’s own second round pick (number 26 overall), the Silver Stars took Serbia’s Sonja Petrovic. The forward never suited up for San Antonio, and she was traded to the Chicago Sky in March of 2012. Petrovic played in 30 games that season for the Sky, and averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds.
She didn’t play again in the league until 2016 when she signed with the Phoenix Mercury. Petrovic saw action in 31 games for Phoenix, starting 13. She average 5.1 points and 2.2 rebounds while making 34.4 percent of her shots from beyond the arc. Petrovic did not play in the W in 2017.
With the final pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, San Antonio chose Louisville forward Candyce Bingham. As a senior, Bingham was named to the All-Big West First Team after averaging 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds. She helped lead the Cardinals to a 34-5 record which included wins over No. 1 seeds Maryland and Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament as Louisville advanced to its first ever national title game before falling to UConn. The Silver Stars cut Bingham prior to the start of the 2009 regular season.
