2018 Year In Review: Nia Coffey
HOW SHE JOINED THE ACES
The San Antonio Stars selected Coffey with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft after her standout career at Northwestern.
SEASON OVERVIEW
Coffey appeared poised for a breakout year throughout the first two weeks of the season, as she was averaging 13.0 points per game with four double-digit scoring efforts through the Aces’ first five games. She was also averaging just under five rebounds per game, and was getting to the free throw line an average of 6.8 times per game.
It was more of the same throughout much of the first half of the Aces’ sixth game of the season, which came on the road at Chicago. Coffey played 13 of the first 17 minutes against the Sky, and had eight points, before she came crashing down to the floor while driving the lane with 3:11 to go in the second quarter. She injured her ankle on the play, and missed the next four games.
Although she recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in her second game back, Coffey was never quite able to recapture the magic of those first two weeks.
Still, she nearly tripled her scoring out put from her rookie season, and increased her per game averages and shooting percentages in nearly every major category.
BEST GAMES
Coffey’s career-high, 23-point effort vs. Seattle on May 27 is tops on the list, as she went 8 for 11 from the floor, including two of three from long distance. Her double-double against the Mercury on June 17, also ranks as a highlight of the season.
WHERE IS SHE NOW?
Coffey is playing in Australia for the Adelaide Lightning. She leads the team in scoring (15.7) and rebounding (8.8), while connecting on 44 percent of her field goal attempts and 35 percent of her shots from long distance. A recent four-game winning streak has Adelaide in fourth place in the eight-team league.
